Not Bad for a Farm Kid
bomber wings Epilogue
I stayed in the military as a reservist, after being released from active duty, but my military career ended during the "Cuban Missle Crisis."

One Saturday morning at 7 A.M., our doorbell rang. At the door was a postman with a letter from the Air Force, with a return receipt requested. Since a number of fellow officers in my reserve unit had been called, I knew it was orders for me to report for active duty. I didn't open the envelope until 10 o'clock.

The letter notified me that I had an unsatisfactory year and had three options:

  1. attend 35 weekly meetings (35 were required for a satisfactory year),
  2. do a series of correspondence courses, or
  3. retire.
Betty, Brock, and their kids,
Bob, Carol, Bill, and Jim Due to the traveling I did with my work, it was almost impossible to attend the required meetings. I didn't have the enthusiasm for another war, or desire to have another command. I didn't wish to gamble that I wouldn't be called soon, having four children at home and not wanting to leave all the responsibility of rearing them to my wife. These points were all considered in the decision process. I decided to retire as a Major with 16 years of service.

Not bad for a northeastern Colorado farm kid with no college.
