Uganda, sometimes called the "Pearl of Africa," is the nation of which Karamoja is a region. Uganda straddles the equator in east central Africa, and is bounded on the north by Sudan, in the west by Congo, on the east by Kenya, and on the south by Rwanda, Tanzania, and Lake Victoria.

The capital city, Kampala, borders the north shore of Lake Victoria.
