the Singala trading center The Singala Trading Center

Just south of the Singeltarys' compound and a three minute walk away is the trading center of Singala. It is similar to the Camp Swahili areas, but smaller in physical size and frequented predominately by the Tepez/Karamojong. When the mountain villages come to gather in Moroto this is where they stay.

woman drinking ngagwe (beer)
in Singala The Tepez market is here, and like Camp Swahili, this place is a distressing neighborhood to walk through. The brewing and drinking of ngagwe (a beer brewed from local grain) is obvious, and at night, the sounds of drunkenness fill the air.

Carolyn, who formerly worked for the Singletarys, lives here. While they were gone from Moroto for a period of time, Carolyn began to brew and drink again. She and her sister beat a man unconscious and were thrown in jail.

Children of Singala Larry has been Bible-storying in Singala. A man named Teko Paul and his family are new believers who want to know the whole truth of God's Word and are inviting their neighbors to hear the stories.
