En La Villita, Subject Search

Hello,

I am looking for artists (people involved in creative work) who would be interested in being my subjects for a new series of panoramic portrait photographs that I am about to begin. The series will explore people creating in the context of the La Villita community. The arts I want to capture cover the entire spectrum, from the more obvious visual arts (painting, sculpting, etc.), to dance, drama, literature, and beyond. The series builds on a previous body of work I produced in 2007 in conjunction with FotoSeptiembre, and this new work will most likely result in a public show to be exhibited later in the year (possibly in a La Villita venue).

The unusual photographic format that I work in (panoramic/extreme-wide-angle) opens up possibilities of seeing artists in the context of their environment (La Villita in this case) that are not afforded by more conventional formats. The processes I use also place requirements on my subjects— that they pose motionless for some period of time (several seconds to portions of a minute). These will not be "off the cuff" documentary snapshots, but will require some time discussing the potential image, setting up the sequence, and finally recording it. Potential subjects should expect to spend somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes for the session.

Finally, these contextual portraits will be collaboration between me, my subjects, and the context in which they are posed. I want to hear any ideas you have about your creative relationship to the La Villita community: specific locations, times, and people that are important to you in La Villita:

  • What is it about La Villita that is special to you?

  • What connects you to this place?

If you create, are associated somehow with La Villita (this need not be in an official capacity), and have the patience to pose as my subject, I would like to speak with you further. Please provide me with some contact information below (phone number, email address, etc.), or call me yourself at 241-6132 and I can give you further information or set up a time for a photographic session.
